Tree Lighting in Norwood
This year on December 15th the weather Gods were kind and gave us spring like temperatures. Community Board 7 residents came out in large numbers for the ceremony. Over the last few years I have made photos of my neighbors at various community events. It is a privilege to document the growing up of our children and new additions to families and our community. Due to the Magical nature of Norwood, the adults are not adding years just wisdom!
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone Happy Holidays and a very Happy and Prosperous 2012.

Celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe in Norwood
10 days ago on a Sunday, live music from the street made its way into our living room. Curiosity insisted that the whole family investigate. 60 feet below at street level, we observed a colorful procession of people in traditional costumes, carrying icons of the Virgin Mary and flowers, lots of flowers. At the back of the parade was a predominantly wind and percussion band. Curiously, unlike the rest of the parade, the band was mostly devoid of color. They made up for it with their enthusiastic music.
Camera in hand, I gave chase down Tryon Avenue and finally caught up with my neighbors at the Woodlawn cemetery. The procession with a police escort, meandered through the neighborhood before culminating at St. Ann’s Church on Bainbridge Avenue. I would like to thank my fellow Norwood residents, for letting me document them celebrating their faith with their families. It was a moving experience for me.

A Norwwood Halloween
A school night with homework deadline did not deter hundreds of children from coming out for Halloween trick or treating. The pirate's expression in the last image of the slide show is exactly how I felt while making photographs on Halloween. These images were created on Bainbridge Avenue and 204 Street in the Bronx.

The Prom at Montefiore
For the Last two years I have covered the Prom at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore
The slide show is of photographs made during the May 7, 2011 party. It was good to see the children forgetting about their life threatening illnesses and enjoying the evening. I thank them for letting me be a part of the festivities. The Prom was put together by a wonderful dedicated team of very hardworking people of the Phoebe H. Stein Child Life Program, of the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. It is always inspiring to see the Child Life program family working tirelessly with the children. If you would like to read more about their work please click here. Funding for the Prom was provided by: Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation, Starlight Starbright, Operation Prom. It was attended by 35 patients and 20 dates of patients.

Fordham Road Renaissance Festival
On Aug 21, I found myself on East Fordham road just east of the Grand Concourse, among thousands who were enjoying the Fordham Road Renaissance Festival. Street photography at close quarters is one of my favorite ways of making photographs. Let me not try and describe what I saw, let me show you! Click on the slide show window to see the photographs larger.

I Hate The Smell Of Smoke In the Morning
The Phone woke me at 3:45am! The last two times this happened we had big fires in our Norwood neighborhood. I could smell the smoke and heard my self saying in not again please not again. Rushed to 204 street and Perry ave and found our brave FDNY men in control of the situation. Thank God we did not have a large fire like the last two times. Thank you VM for the call.

Grand Dominican Parade
July 25 2010 was a HOT Sunday for most of the day before the weather changed its mind and blew down trees. It was also the 20th Anniversary of the Grand Dominican Parade in the Bronx. Walking down the Grand Concourse, I found myself rubbing shoulders with over 2000 marchers and many more spectators. People enjoying their culture with pride, a beautiful Kaleidoscope of colors, a photographers dream. I did not notice the heat or the exhaustion during my time spent with the happy and energetic marching bands, artists, elected officials and a variety of other groups showcasing Dominican culture. Like a child in a candy store, in my minds eye I saw a gazillion images, many slipped away, some I bottled. Hope you enjoy the slide show, it was a privilege and a pleasure making the photographs. Have an experiment in mind. I would like to make contact with the people in the photographs, would you like to help me? If you know anyone in the photographs, please get in touch with me at lens(at)rawlat.com
